Motivate Year 8!

Benefits of School Partnership Working

Motivate Year 8

Stamford Queen Eleanor School is a co-educational, 11-16 school, with a specialism in technology. It enjoys extensive grounds and modern facilities on the edge of the historic market town of Stamford in Lincolnshire.

Recognised for high student achievement and for its positive role in the local community, the School has high expectations for all its students and aims to help each one of them achieve their full potential.

Queen Eleanor School has a formal partnership with The Deepings School, an outstanding local school with a specialism in Business & Enterprise. Bright Futures has been working successfully with The Deepings School for many years, running work-related learning programmes, so The Deepings School recommended Bright Futures to Queen Eleanor School.

Year 8 students from Stamford Queen Eleanor were taken off timetable for a day to participate in team activities, quizzes and construction and trading tasks to test their business acumen and entrepreneurial flair. The purpose of the session, titled ‘Motivate Year 8’, was to help students learn about core business skills and the role of technology in business and the economy.

Students challenged throughout to test their ability to adapt and work under pressure.

Sue Lomas, Queen Eleanor’s work related learning coordinator, said: “In the press we often hear employers commenting on how crucial key business skills are if young people are to excel in the workplace. This session was designed to help our pupils respond to commercial challenges from a young age. ‘Motivate Year 8’ was informative, interactive and left the students buzzing with confidence. On a practical level students will be able to apply the many skills they gained today in their future studies and their eventual careers.”

Queen Eleanor head teacher Wendy Hamilton, added: “One of the keys to being a successful school both now and in the future is to provide students with the opportunity to work together in different ways. Days like this allow them to think differently and really focus on developing their commercial and teamwork skills.”

Victoria Porter aged 12 said: “We had a brilliant day, the challenges really made us think about how we would respond to a real-life business situation. It was great fun working in a team, everyone had such good ideas and we all felt proud of our final product. I definitely feel more confident about my business skills and I’m looking forward to going on work experience next year and testing them out in the real world.”

Bright Futures Managing Director, Matt Watson, commented: “We were delighted that The Deeping School felt able to recommend us to Queen Eleanor School. A high proportion of our business comes from ongoing work with satisfied clients, and to be recommended by one of those clients is the biggest compliment we can receive. We were delighted by the success of our first programme with Queen Eleanor School – ‘Motivate Year 8!’ – and look forward to working with them again.”
