What is digital marketing and why does it matter?

Digital marketing is the engine behind modern brand communication. It covers all marketing efforts that use the internet or an electronic device, and it’s how businesses of all sizes connect with current and potential customers online.

Whether it’s through websites, search engines, social media, email, online articles, video platforms or adverts, digital marketing is about reaching audiences where they already spend their time: on the internet.

What does digital marketing involve?

Digital marketing includes a wide range of strategies and activities, such as:

  • website content: creating clear, user-friendly and engaging pages

  • social media: using platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and TikTok to share content, build engagement and grow communities

  • search engine optimisation (SEO): making content easier to find via search engines like Google

  • pay-per-click advertising (PPC): promoting content through paid placements

  • email marketing: communicating with customers through regular, targeted messages

  • content marketing: producing blogs, videos and other material that provides value beyond just selling a product

How does it work day to day?

The day-to-day tasks of a digital marketer depend on their role. A copywriter focuses on producing written content tailored for specific platforms. A social media manager plans posts, engages with followers and monitors responses. An SEO specialist researches keywords, adjusts web pages and analyses traffic patterns.

Others may work in visual design, email automation or trend analysis.

The tools of the trade

Digital marketing uses a combination of everyday tools and specialist platforms. Word processors like Microsoft Word are still useful for drafting text. Once the content is ready, it can be posted or scheduled using:

  • social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn

  • scheduling tools like Hootsuite, which help plan content and view analytics

  • performance tools such as Google Analytics or platform insights to assess what’s working and what needs changing

Understanding your audience

The key to successful digital marketing is understanding the people you’re trying to reach. This includes their needs, questions, habits and preferences. It’s not just about being visible online, it’s about being relevant and useful.

That means crafting the right tone, choosing the best platform and offering content that fits what your audience is looking for.

Why digital marketing matters

People are online throughout the day. They browse, shop, research, watch videos and scroll through feeds. Digital marketing helps businesses meet people where they are, when they’re ready to engage.

Traditional marketing like posters, print adverts or flyers still has a role, but digital marketing offers flexibility, wider reach and measurable results. When someone reads a blog, checks a website or interacts with a post, they’re doing it on their terms, at a time that suits them.

Should every business use digital marketing?

In short, yes.

Having an online presence through social media, a good website and regular content updates is now expected. It builds credibility, improves visibility and helps customers understand what a business offers. Depending on the target audience, platforms like TikTok, YouTube or LinkedIn might be worth exploring too.

Even businesses that rely mostly on offline services can benefit from digital marketing to attract interest, generate leads or simply stay visible.

In summary

Digital marketing isn’t optional anymore. It allows businesses to reach people in a way that is timely, targeted and cost-effective. Whether through blogs, videos, social posts or search results, digital marketing connects you with the people who matter most.
